Basically it takes the median of the nearest 50 or so places with the same number of bedrooms that are currently on padmapper. Interesting idea for area medians...

Median info is very useful. Can you say something about your sources? e.g. do you average nearby padmapper listings? If so, at what distance, how long ago?

It would be useful to see a map of median prices for the filter settings. It could help one figure out what section of town to look in. Or if one could click on a point and see what the median is for that neighborhood (if there are no padmapper listings then there is no way to see the median for a particular neighborhood).

Hey Kim, I believe it's the next post, but sometime down the line, PadMapper became persistent even when your browser is restarted.

But your Official Feature Request is duly noted :-) I'll give it some thought, I think the work-home scenario is a pretty common one, and it's not currently covered.

I know this is an old post of yours, but I just started using PadMapper tonight, and I just found the blog, so I'm just reading all the backlogged posts. Anyway, I really enjoy that if I don't quit my browser, I don't lose my session. I am, however, dreading tomorrow at work when I will inevitably open PadMapper and click on all those places that I have already checked out...if only I could log in to my PadMapper account and have my previous session all saved nice and neat and all!

Perhaps I can make this an official feature request? I am not usually one to WANT to join new sites, create new logins, have new things to think about, etc. So the fact that I am practically begging for this feature says something.

Or maybe I shouldn't look for apartments from my work computer.

There are two things that would be useful here, the first being easier to implement than the first. PadMapper is great, but one thing I am looking for is its ability to find me apartments close to a possible location. While I can of course do this visually, it is often hard to estimate how far of a walk/drive/commute one place is to another.

The first way to fix this would be a simple option where you can specify and address and than just draw a bubble or filter results that are within some straight-line distance.

The second and totally awesome feature would be to utilize the walking/driving time information provided by google maps to filter results based on their proximity to a particular address in either walking or driving time.

Either of these fixes would make PadMapper absolutely perfect.

Hey Roy, thanks for the feedback. That's basically what I ended up doing - on the top of the favorites list, there's a save link, which emails you a summary list of the apartments in your list and a link that brings you to PadMapper with that version of the list loaded up. It's definitely not very secure, but like you said, there's not much room for abuse anyway (the saved lists aren't editable - they need to be saved again). On the flip side, it makes it very easy to share lists just by emailing the link.

Why don't you use the Tiny URL scheme, where you provide a Tiny URL, or something like it (like the YouTube video ID), that gives users a link to a collection stored on your server. That way, all they need to do is email a link to someone and that can be used to edit.
It's not all that secure - but hey - who's interested in the houses you're looking at anyway.

Walkscore is great!
the only caveat: All food stores, for example, are treated equally. Maybe a separate category for bodegas/mini superrettes, etc.,etc., and supermarkets? gets cumbersome, I know, but if I'm walking, the distance to a supermarket counts alot more than the distance to an overpriced candy shop.
