St. Louis celebrates its history and diversity in a variety of ways. The city’s location on the Mississippi River plays a vital role not only in the city’s economic survival but also the Midwest, due to the river, Interstate highways, and railroad. Three airports serve the region as well.

St. Louis houses eight Fortune 500 companies, including Anheuser-Busch, Edward Jones, Wells Fargo, Stifel Nicolaus, and Scottrade. Numerous companies are headquartered in St. Louis and the greater St. Louis area, such as Schick, Playtex, Monsanto Company, Emerson Electric, Charter Communications, Energizer, Hardee’s, National Car Rental, and more.

The St. Louis area has 40 technical schools, universities, and colleges. Three universities are classified as research institutions – Washington University in St. Louis, Saint Louis University, and University of Missouri-St. Louis. Tourism is a driving force in the local economy because of the vast amount of activities, events, and attractions. St. Louis is also a center for musical entertainment. The city is known for its great blues, ragtime, and jazz music. Several artists got their start in the city like Tina Turner, Scott Joplin, Chuck Berry, and Miles Davis. St. Louis also has a municipal opera and symphony orchestra.

St. Louis is home to several professional sports teams, such as the St. Louis Rams (NFL), St. Louis Blues (NHL), and St. Louis Cardinals (MLB).
