Norfolk is the second largest city in Virginia. Located at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, the city is named for the large harbor. It is also known for its proximity to Virginia Beach and at the core of Hampton Roads. The city has a population of 242,803, according to the 2010 census. The median household income is $31,815.

The city is most commonly known for its relationship to the U.S. Navy as a strategic transportation and military location. In fact, the Norfolk Naval Base is the largest in the world and is also the home of NATO.

While the military is a large source of economic stability and growth, shipbuilding is a staple. Defense contracting also plays a vital role in the local economy. Shipping and transport companies are major employers. Coal is among the top items transported. Among those companies with facilities in Norfolk are: Landmark Communications, Norfolk Southern, Israel-based Zim Integrated Shipping Services, A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, Dominion Enterprises, Smithfield Foods, Dollar Tree, and Amerigroup.

Tourism is a growing industry in Norfolk. The cruise industry is a major contributor to this. The city is a center for performing arts and museums. Attractions include The Chrysler Museum of Art, Nauticus (home to the battleship USS Wisconsin, hi-definition films, hands-on exhibits, aquaria, and more), the General Douglas MacArthur Memorial, Hermitage Foundation, Harrison Opera House (home of the Virginia Opera), Chrysler Hall (home of the Virginia Symphony), Attucks Theatre, Norfolk Botanical Garden, and the Virginia Zoological Park. Town Pointe Park is the main location for festivals and parades.

Norfolk’s historical neighborhoods have been popular settings for movies and television shows. Popular neighborhoods include Berkley, Downtown, Ghent, Wiloughby Split, and Ocean View.
