Living in Los Angeles

LA is regarded as the entertainment capital of the world — and it’s easy to see why. Life in Los Angeles is certainly entertaining.

From celebrity sightings to sweeping mountain vistas, big city skylines to underground after parties, world-class museums to local farmers markets, and all the film crews, artists, bartenders, chefs, farmers and musicians hustling in between. The people of Los Angeles work hard and play hard. You’re going to dig it.

Outdoors

Not many people think of the great outdoors when they think of LA, but the truth is most locals are very in-tune with Mother Nature. In Los Angeles, you don’t have to travel more than 10 miles from downtown to find a trailhead into the foothills. Dense urban streets give way to shimmering beaches, grassy hillsides, and rugged mountains. There are no park fees and no need to pack for a road trip, so many Angelenos are able to squeeze an outdoor excursion into their daily routine.

Party Life

Los Angeles definitely lives up to its reputation as a party town. You can find an infinitely diverse array of late-night shenanigans, from steampunk parties to rooftop soirées to heavy metal carnivals to underground warehouse raves. How do you find these imaginative parties? Purely by word-of-mouth.

Grand Central Market

This 100-year-old food hall is the culinary epicenter of LA. Many locals will gladly spend a day-off from work trying to eat their way through the melting pot of the Los Angeles food scene. For starters, try the city’s most coveted orders: Tacos Tumbras a Tomas, Sticky Rice, and Eggslut.

Transportation ICN
transportation

Los Angeles traffic is real. It’s not uncommon for the average commute to take over 2 hours, and trying to get around on public transit can even get a little complicated. The savviest way out of LA’s rush-hour standstills is to choose your apartment wisely, plan a smart commute, and try to avoid that pesky 101.

Sports ICN
sports

If you’re a sports fan, there’s no shortage of teams to support with two teams in each major league. The teams of Los Angeles are the LA Dodgers and LA Angels (MLB), the LA Rams and LA Chargers (NFL), the LA Lakers and LA Clippers (NBA), and the LA Kings and Anaheim Ducks (NHL).

weather

The weather in Los Angeles is generally warm and sunny. In the late spring and early summer, LA experiences “June Gloom,” where overcast skies and fog are common in the mornings, but tend to clear by early afternoon.

Landmarks ICN
company headquarters

You may already know that Los Angeles is home to 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros., Universal Pictures and Paramount - but the Hollywood economy is quickly diversifying its portfolio with strong technology, aerospace, energy, fashion and financial sectors. Well-known tech companies with headquarters in Los Angeles include Snapchat, Dollar Shave Club, TicketMaster, and Hulu. All the big names in aerospace have offices in the area, including Boeing, Lockheed, Raytheon SpaceX, Aerojet Rocketdyne, Virgin Galactic and Northrop Grumman. In downtown, you’ll find major financial operations such as US Bancorp, Ernst & Young and Bank of America. And on the fashion scene, you can add Quicksilver, American Apparel, Lucky Brand, Oakley, Forever 21 and PacSun to the list of companies that now call Los Angeles home.

Neighborhoods in Los Angeles

Downtown

If you’re looking for killer views, chic spaces, and a place in the heart of the city, then head to downtown Los Angeles. The central location is ideal for people who prefer walking to driving, and its system of subways are like the key to a secret city where there are no traffic jams.

Hollywood

Hollywood makes up a tiny slice of this diverse city. While there are some local eateries, art galleries and even a farmers market, most locals can’t deal with constant flow of thousands of visitors in this tourist-centric neighborhood.

West Hollywood

West Hollywood is the heart of LA’s glamorous gay scene and the insane nightlife that goes with it. There is also a multifaceted selection of great restaurants, cafes, shops, art galleries and events to keep any Angeleno happy.

The Valley

“The Valley” is a sprawling area of popular-yet-affordable neighborhoods like North Hollywood, Studio City and Burbank. While each neighborhood has its fair share of restaurants, entertainment and late-night hotspots, there is always a reason to commute back into the city center.

Hipster Havens

Silver Lake and Echo Park are LA’s most indie and artsy neighborhoods. Locally-owned, organic, inventive restaurants run the culinary scene, along with a healthy smattering of live local music, reinvented spaces, and weird boutiques.

Venice

Best known for its beautiful beaches, Venice is where LA’s surfer-hippie crowd tends to gravitate. And for good reason. Aside from the obvious joy of waking up next to the ocean, Venice has tons of nightlife and plenty of places to grab a bite, so you really never have to venture into the city.

Santa Monica

Santa Monica Beach is where you’ll find quintessential West LA: the famous Santa Monica Pier, tons of gourmet restaurants, plenty of nightlife, and enough shops to empty your wallet. The commute into LA isn’t ideal from here, but if you can get by on Santa Monica employment and weekly trips to the Main Street Farmers Market then you’re golden.

Renting an Apartment in Los Angeles

Make a Budget

Create a neat, organized budget that includes your monthly income, your housing budget, and your potential costs for things like cable, internet, utilities and transportation. Then search for all-inclusive listings with rents slightly above your price point. Play with the numbers a bit, and you may find that an apartment costing $200 more than you planned to pay will actually save you hundreds on other expenses.

Consider Parking

Finding an apartment with its own parking spot is like striking gold in Los Angeles. Renters spend a good amount of time and money driving around in circles looking for a parking spot. They have to keep up with the street cleaning schedule, as well as worry about break-ins and hit-and-runs. So if you find an apartment complex with its own parking lot or garage, jump on it!
