Historic Writer's Retreat, Huckleberry Artists Colony The Historic Writer's Retreat was part of the eclectic Huckleberry Mountain Artists' Colony in the 1930s-40s. You'll understand why artists congregated here the moment you arrive. The wooded mountain setting is serene and the perfect place to relax and recharge or become inspired for your next creative calling. Drink your morning coffee or tea on our large deck next to the stream, gather inspiration with a book from our large library or jump right in and begin writing your next (novel, article, blog, letter) using our old school typewriter, stationery or on your laptop if that's more your speed. The Historic Writer's Retreat is the perfect setting to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life while still enjoying modern day luxuries. If you get tired of the peace and quiet or feel like having someone else cook for you, the cottage is a short drive to historic downtown Hendersonville and Asheville with many restaurants and grocery stores. Hiking, waterfalls, seasonal apple picking, and vineyards are also close by. ( We provide an updated list to all of our favorite places but encourage you to share any new finds.) Our king size beds use the Zinus Green Tea memory foam mattress (12"). A super thick mattress pad cover and 100% cotton bedding. The mattress is medium firm, which we've found to be the most comfortable for the greatest number of people. Please note that while the Writer's Retreat has been fully updated with modern conveniences, it is still a historic cabin with the quirks of an almost 100-year-old house, including floors that slope and oddly placed steps. It may not be suited for guests with mobility challenges and is not child-proofed. The road in has taken on the same rustic charm since Helene so please be aware that low profile vehicles are not suggested, however, we promise you it is worth the drive and part of the adventure. The Writer's Retreat is directly across the private drive from the
